Contrary to the common belief regarding what has been distant and the rare paths to achieving it, what is thought to be a natural bypass and an inevitable transgression is nothing but a deceptive forgetfulness and a trick practiced by the human psyche to convince itself that there are no consequences for what has been prevented from being attained. Rather, what one perceives as a bypassing of unfulfilled wishes may be a highly complex trap into which one willingly and voluntarily slips and from which one never escapes.
Our connection to the dreams we have not achieved, our relation to the incomplete paths, the losses we have endured, and the missed opportunities does not cease simply because they have elapsed or stopped; rather, they extend beneath a thin layer in our unconscious, spreading their effects and building their influence as another life, even if we delude ourselves into burying them in the depths of the past.
Just as the events, occurrences, and achievements we realize have their own way and role in shaping our consciousness and our psychological, neurological, and philosophical structure, the incomplete paths and the decisions that have not crossed the threshold of intentions also have their manifestations and roles in shaping us and forming our consciousness, even if we assume they are merely shadows of our reality. In truth, the non-events, although they are truncated experiences, do not prevent us from receiving the same wisdom that our lived experiences grant us; rather, they constitute a significant part of our internal makeup, and we may invoke them without realizing it to argue against our extinguishment, rekindle our enthusiasm, and stimulate our creativity. Therefore, it can be said that a person lives two lives: one that they have lived and one they have hoped for, both of which remain attached to their memory, leaving their imprints in their mental worlds and sharing in the formation of their psychological tendencies, the construction of the self, and the shaping of knowledge and perception. The conversations we have not had, the paths we have not taken, the apologies we have postponed, the feelings that remained mere thoughts and did not become reality, and the hopeful visions may rise to become the most substantial and present part of our selves, and perhaps they are one of our clever tricks for understanding what happens.
The authority of possibilities in our lives leaves a delicate scar in our souls that keeps its trace alive, and perhaps over time it transforms into a vague memory that we cannot deny or affirm, as it becomes intertwined with the fabric of our spirits and feeds on some desire in memory, especially since we feel the impact of what has occurred and touch its influence, while what has not occurred remains open to multiple possibilities and interpretations, thus functionally transforming from an imminent event to a deep internal narrative that continues to expand in memory before it turns into creative tensions whose effects resonate and manifest at certain times.
Many philosophers argue against this, asserting its correctness. The founder of individual psychology, Austrian "Alfred Adler," believes that "a person is shaped more by their struggles and failures than by their victories," as if what has not been achieved leaves an impact on the psyche that drives the search for a deeper meaning in our lives. Failure, by its nature, transforms into fuel, a creative and intellectual energy for achieving a civilizational or aesthetic work, which is also affirmed by existential philosopher "Søren Kierkegaard," who sees that "man lives between what is and what can be," indicating that the unfulfilled possibilities do not abandon us but remain as specters in our souls, their influence lingering until we see their effect through some action. This realization was echoed by Seneca when he posed the question of "whether what has not occurred is less present in our lives than what has," later answering that "we suffer in our imagination more than we suffer in reality," a sharp response that aligns with many views suggesting that humans transform their unfulfilled dreams and severed hopes into an internal compass pointing towards creative paths like art and literature, demonstrating the impact of lost possibilities and the "non-event" in shaping consciousness, building perception, and the ability to articulate the self.
One of the enduring examples in the realm of literature is the great Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, who lived a life full of disappointments, starting from the poverty that crushed many of his dreams, through the imprisonment that dashed his hopes, and ending with the illness that exhausted his body. Yet he transformed all of that into profound philosophical reflections on human nature, turning it into a clever and insightful material for understanding humanity.
Similarly, there is the pioneer of nightmarish writing, Czech Franz Kafka, who lived throughout his life with an overwhelming sense of alienation and did not achieve during his forty years what he hoped for, to the extent that he did not receive literary recognition during his lifetime that matched the value of what he wrote, creating his own unique literary world and making him live within a complex maze of his desires. His works came as attempts to explain life and understand the other life he did not live. The same goes for French novelist Marcel Proust, who spent many years in isolation, during which illness prevented him from realizing many of his practical and social dreams, turning his isolation into the most important project of his life, with his immortal novel "In Search of Lost Time" serving as a document through which he recaptures an incomplete part of his life.
Thus, many great literary works seem to have been written with a delicate luminosity, coming together as messages to the dreams that were difficult to achieve and the feelings that remained footsteps and the paths that were not taken, proving that the brilliance of the writer and the genius of the author transcend merely channeling what they lived and experienced for the benefit of their pen, to also invoke the events that were not completed, demonstrating that the authority of possibilities is potent and its effect does not cease in the life of the writer, and that what has not happened was never an empty page in their life but rather a space of manifestation that grants us exceptional literature.
