Since its inception, Orientalism has been one of the most debated fields in Arabic and Islamic studies; positions on it have varied between those who view it as a scientific project that contributed to the service of Arab and Islamic heritage, and those who consider it a tool linked to religious and colonial projects and the construction of the Western image of Islam and the East.
Between these two positions, the need arose for a balanced scientific reading that acknowledges the achievements, critiques biases, and accommodates the transformations that Western studies on Islam have undergone in recent decades.
In this dialogue, we host researcher and historian specializing in early Islamic history, Dr. Awad bin Nahi, to trace with him the emergence of the Orientalist movement, its schools and trends, its most significant scientific contributions, the criticisms directed at it, and to pause at the concept of "new Orientalism," its relationship with contemporary Western studies, the impact of globalization and the digital revolution on this field, and the future of Islamic studies in Western universities. We will also explore his methodological vision for how Muslim researchers should engage with Orientalist studies.
• To begin, tell us about the emergence of the Orientalist movement, its main historical motivations, and whether its motivations were purely scientific or mixed with religious, political, and colonial dimensions?
•• There is no specific and agreed-upon date for the beginning of Orientalism; it gradually crystallized due to religious, political, economic, colonial, and scientific factors, linked to the nature of the relationship between the Islamic world and Christian Europe. The Crusades, the fall of Andalusia, geographical discoveries, and European colonial expansion contributed to enhancing interest in studying the languages, religions, cultures, and social and political structures of the East, paving the way for understanding its societies and engaging with them.
Two main phases can be distinguished in the development of Orientalism. The first began within the church, with prominent figures such as Constantine the African, who collected and translated several Arabic medical texts at the Monastery of Monte Cassino in southern Italy. This was followed by the initiative of Peter the Venerable in 1142, who oversaw a team that translated the Holy Quran and some Islamic texts, and Robert of Ketton completed the first complete Latin translation of the Quran in 1143. This coincided with the flourishing of the translation movement, where numerous Arabic and Islamic works in medicine, philosophy, astronomy, and mathematics were translated into Latin.
The second phase was characterized by the transfer of Oriental studies from the ecclesiastical institution to European universities, which established chairs and specialized departments in Eastern languages and cultures; such as Leiden University in 1613, Cambridge in 1632, and Oxford in 1636. Thus, Orientalism gradually transformed from a church activity with religious and dialectical purposes into an organized academic field, with its institutions, methodologies, and specializations, while still being influenced by political, colonial, and scientific motivations.
• What are the most prominent Orientalist schools or trends? How do their methodologies and views on Islam differ?
•• If we adopt a geographical basis, Orientalist schools can be classified into French, Italian, Dutch, German, British, and American, with the British and American schools falling within the Anglo-Saxon sphere, each retaining its own academic traditions.
According to intellectual and methodological trends, the critical historical school emerges, which relied on the critique of Islamic texts and sources, with notable figures such as Theodor Nöldeke and Julius Wellhausen. The civilizational school studied Islamic civilization as an integrated system, represented by Thomas Arnold and Hamilton Gibb. The social school focused on the structures of Islamic societies and cultures, particularly in French circles, while the philological school employed linguistics in the study of Islamic heritage, especially hadith, with prominent figures like Ignaz Goldziher and Joseph Schacht. These trends paved the way for the emergence of the revisionist or skeptical school, known as the New Revisionists, in the second half of the 1970s, and its activity remains prominent today.
• If we want to evaluate Orientalism fairly, what are its most significant scientific contributions? What are the most notable mistakes or biases it has encountered?
•• Orientalism has made important scientific contributions, just as it has methodological, intellectual, and political shortcomings. Orientalists and European institutions contributed to collecting, cataloging, editing, and publishing manuscripts of Arab and Islamic heritage, acknowledging that the transfer of some of these to European libraries sometimes occurred for colonial motives or through means that raise ethical and legal issues. The Dutch Brill publishing house stands out in publishing heritage sources since the 19th century, such as "The Arabic Geographical Library," "The History of al-Tabari," "The History of al-Ya'qubi," "The Notification and Supervision," and "The Complete History." Language, epigraphy, and archaeology scholars have also contributed to deciphering ancient languages and scripts, documenting thousands of inscriptions, papyri, and archaeological sites. Orientalist studies have included the history of Islam, its languages, and literatures in modern university studies, applying historical and textual criticism and linguistics, and contributing to the development of text editing, manuscript cataloging, and the establishment of encyclopedias and databases.
Orientalism also helped expand the sources for studying Islamic history to include inscriptions, coins, papyri, and artifacts, alongside Syriac, Greek, Armenian, Coptic, Latin, Persian, and Chinese sources. This allowed for comparing Islamic narratives with external sources and material evidence, building a broader and more critical understanding of Islamic history.
Conversely, some Orientalist writings have been characterized by religious biases, colonial and elitist tendencies, and have fallen into generalizations, stereotypes, and selective use of sources. This was particularly evident among some new revisionists, who exaggerated their skepticism towards Islamic sources, granting greater credibility to non-Islamic sources without subjecting them to the same critical standards. Some interpreted the emergence of Islam as an extension of Judaism and Christianity or as a result of political and economic factors, linking its spread to military power, and doubting the history of the Quran, despite the significant material evidence provided by early manuscripts and inscriptions.
Some aspects of Orientalism have been linked to colonial and missionary projects; however, these negatives should not be generalized to all Orientalists. Therefore, Orientalism should be approached objectively, benefiting from its scientific achievements while critiquing its errors and biases based on balanced methodological foundations.
• To what extent have the writings of Orientalists contributed to shaping the mental image of Islam in the West? Is this perspective still influential in Western universities today?
•• The writings of Orientalists have significantly contributed to shaping the image of Islam in the West; they remained for a long time the main academic source for introducing the Quran, the prophetic biography, and Islamic history. Some of these writings were influenced by religious backgrounds and preconceived Western notions, linking Islam to violence, military expansion, backwardness, and extremism. However, Islamic studies in Western universities have seen notable development, with more objective trends emerging in the study of Islam and its history. The technological revolution and new media have also facilitated access to diverse sources and perspectives, including contributions from Muslim researchers. This development is evident in the flourishing of Quranic studies over the last decade, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic; researchers have turned to studying early Quranic manuscripts, their texts, and Islamic inscriptions containing Quranic verses. These material evidences and modern methodologies have provided a more realistic view of the history and documentation of the Quranic text, in contrast to trends that still question its authenticity and certainty.
Thus, contemporary Western studies are no longer subject to a single Orientalist perspective, and Orientalism no longer monopolizes the interpretation and representation of Islam in Western universities.
• What is meant by new Orientalism? What are the main differences between it and classical Orientalism?
•• The term "new Orientalism" remains controversial regarding its concept and the date of its emergence; some researchers link it to the post-World War I era, others to the end of the Cold War, while some believe its features became clearer after the events of September 11, 2001. It is characterized by expanding research areas in sociology, women's studies, contemporary Islamic societies, and political and religious movements.
The revisionist school, which emerged in British circles during the 1970s, can be included within this broad context, and its influence later extended to the United States. Prominent representatives include John Wansbrough, Patricia Crone, Michael Cook, Gunther Luling, Yehuda Nevo, Karl-Heinz Ohlig, Christoph Luxenberg, Fred Donner, Stephen Shoemaker, and Gabriel Said Reynolds. This school has transformed the study of the origins of Islam, the history of the Quran, and the prophetic biography; it subjected traditional Islamic sources to rigorous critique and utilized non-Islamic sources, inscriptions, coins, and papyri. Its methodologies continue to influence Western studies, but its early hypotheses have faced criticism, even from some of its pioneers, including Michael Cook, who has retracted several of his previous convictions.
• Have the objectives of Orientalism changed in its new form? Or have only the tools changed?
•• The objectives of Orientalism have not changed radically, although its religious and colonial motivations have diminished, and there is a more specialized academic interest in Islam, its history, and its contemporary societies. Its tools have also evolved by benefiting from auxiliary sciences and digital technologies. Nevertheless, some studies remain linked to political, security, and missionary objectives, especially after the events of September 11.
• What are the most prominent issues that new Orientalism focuses on today? What is the role of research centers, media, and digital platforms in this regard?
•• Before answering, it should be noted that Western academic institutions no longer widely use the term "Orientalism," but have replaced it with names more consistent with modern disciplines. For instance, Oxford University changed the name of the "Institute of Oriental Studies" to the "Institute of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies" in 2022. The title "Orientalist" has also diminished in favor of more specialized titles, such as historian, theologian, researcher, and others. Contemporary Western studies have focused on issues of Islamic movements, extremism, migration, Muslims in the West, women, minorities, and identity, alongside the traditional topics mentioned earlier. Media and digital technologies have played a significant role through digitization projects and new media platforms that have allowed researchers to present their views and reach the audience directly. Moreover, it has become easier today to stay updated on the work of Western researchers and to communicate with them and discuss their views and theses.
• How should a Muslim researcher engage with Orientalist studies? Is outright rejection required, or should there be a fair critical reading?
•• A researcher should engage with these studies through an objective critical reading, neither through complete rejection nor absolute acceptance, and should benefit from their scientific methodologies and the solid investigations and results they have provided, as well as new sources. The researcher should also be aware of the impact of the religious, cultural, and political backgrounds of some of these Western researchers and distinguish between their trends, as they do not represent a single school.
• What criteria can be used to distinguish between objective academic research and ideologically driven discourse in Western studies on Islam?
•• This can be achieved by adopting the tools of objective academic research; in historical studies, for example, one should consider the study's methodology, sources, and language, relying on diverse sources, presenting opposing views, and avoiding generalizations, preconceived judgments, or biases.
• How can Arab and Islamic scientific institutions provide a rigorous scientific discourse that contributes to correcting the image and building a balanced intellectual dialogue?
•• By developing scientific research in the humanities departments, training academic staff who understand modern methodologies and produce rigorous research in multiple languages, along with supporting scientific publishing and launching global digital journals and platforms. The response to fallacies should not be through rejecting Western studies but by producing reliable knowledge that discusses them with evidence, competes with them scientifically, and establishes a dialogue based on respect and fairness.
• Do you think that some Arab researchers have been influenced by the Orientalist perspective or have adopted it without scrutiny? How can this be avoided?
•• Yes, there are several prominent Arab researchers or intellectuals whose names I prefer not to mention, who have been influenced by the propositions and methodologies of Orientalists without being aware of the dangers of these propositions or even aware of how to employ them in their studies objectively and professionally. Avoiding this can only be achieved by being aware of the cultural and civilizational differences between the Islamic world and the West, and not being deceived by the strength of the arguments presented by Western researchers, while adhering to the tools of rigorous objective scientific research.
• How do you foresee the future of Islamic studies in Western universities? What are the main challenges facing Muslim researchers in dialogue with Western thought?
•• Arab and Islamic studies remain active in Western universities, despite a decline in student enrollment and funding. This was evident in the criticism by the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies in July 2026 of Exeter University's decision to reduce academic positions in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies. Since the last quarter of the 20th century, the center of gravity in Islamic studies has shifted from Europe, particularly Britain, to American universities, which have attracted prominent researchers such as Bernard Lewis, Michael Cook, and Robert Hoyland. In the field of publishing, the outputs of major academic presses, such as Edinburgh, Brill, Cambridge, Oxford, California, and Harvard, indicate a clear growth in Arab and Islamic studies and the diversity of their topics.
• On a personal level, what motivated you to focus on the topic of Orientalism? What is the most common concept you see that needs correction?
•• The truth is that my interest in Orientalism stems from my specialization in early Islamic history and my eagerness to follow Western studies related to the history of early Islam and its Islamic and non-Islamic sources. I have found important scientific contributions in them, but they need review and critique.
One of the most prominent concepts that need correction is viewing Orientalism as a single stream that is hostile to Islam; Orientalists differ in their motivations, methodologies, and objectivity. It is noteworthy that some of the strongest responses to the propositions of new revisionists have been provided by other Western researchers, thanks to their mastery of methodologies, sources, and languages, and their ability to conduct objective scientific critique.
• In conclusion, what are the most important references you recommend for researchers to understand Orientalism and new Orientalism in a balanced scientific manner?
•• It is difficult to identify a single comprehensive reference for Orientalism; books like "Orientalism" by Edward Said or "Encyclopedia of Orientalists" by Abdul Rahman Badawi do not cover the current transformations in the field, and the book "New Orientalism" by Abdullah Al-Wuhibi - despite its importance - does not encompass all its diverse topics. Therefore, it is advisable to start with dictionaries, encyclopedias, and biographical books on Orientalists to build a general knowledge base about the figures and schools of Orientalism, and then move on to modern academic studies, while keeping up with the output of Orientalists and reading their scientific translations. This way, the researcher combines knowledge of the history of Orientalism with an understanding of its contemporary trends and awareness of its latest achievements.
