The value of a project lies not in what its owner accomplishes during their lifetime, but in what remains capable of contributing after their departure. Ideas may be born in one era, but they only make an impact when another era is more ready to embrace them. From this perspective, we can understand the experience of Dr. musician Adnan Khugh.
He did not view music as just a form of art; rather, he saw it as a science, a culture, and a national identity that deserves to be documented, taught, and to find its place in universities just as it has found its place on stages.
Thus, his journey to the Sorbonne was not that of a researcher seeking an academic degree, but rather an extension of a project he believed in from its beginnings—a project that places Saudi music in the realm of knowledge and grants it its rightful place in academic research.
When he wrote his thesis in French about the experience of artist Talal Maddah, he was not merely recounting the biography of an artist; he was exploring an entire phase of Saudi music history and re-presenting it in a language that the world could understand. He became the first Saudi to earn a doctorate in music from the Sorbonne, opening a new door for the presence of Saudi music in one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
In his artistic experience, he remained faithful to the same project. It was not about producing a multitude of melodies for him, but rather about leaving a lasting impact. Therefore, his works were few, yet they became ingrained in memory because they emerged from a composer who saw each piece as a responsibility and each note as part of a cultural identity deserving of preservation.
He did not stop at the boundaries of composition; he called for the documentation of music through notation, its establishment through scientific research, and the building of academic institutions to embrace it. He believed that art that is not documented loses part of its memory, and that culture which does not produce knowledge leaves a void in its history.
Today, with the cultural movement led by the Ministry of Culture under the Vision 2030 of the Kingdom, and what has been achieved through the Music Authority and the establishment of the Riyadh University of Arts, much of what Adnan Khugh believed in has become a national reality taking shape before us. Therefore, the most beautiful tribute to this pioneer would be for his academic message from the Sorbonne to return to its homeland, to be translated, published, and become a reference in Saudi universities, just as his melodies have become part of the memory of Saudi music. Genuine projects do not end with the departure of their owners; rather, their true journey begins when they transform into knowledge that is passed down through generations.
