Despite the abundance of writers and creators, many texts, novels, and poetry collections remain trapped in drawers!
These are complete texts, sometimes mature, and others postponed that have not found their way to publication, for reasons that vary from fear of reactions, frustration with publishing houses, a desire for perfection, or a lack of confidence in the cultural milieu.
“Okaz” surveyed several writers about the reasons for the confinement of creative and intellectual works in the drawers of some writers and behind the screens of their digital devices; depriving them of the light.
The author as a commodity in the “bazaar”
Iraqi writer, researcher, and academic Ali Thweini acknowledged that he is one of those intellectuals who produce and store their works in the hope that the publishing dilemma, which he described as intractable in Arab culture, will be resolved.
He pointed out that anyone who reads a lot must write a lot, and he emphasized that he found in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia a vibrant and wonderful reading movement, citing the book fairs that have become social festivals, but he noted that they cannot be compared to the amount of writings and publications that unleash ideas.
He added: I have five ready texts, and I find them all rich; as they took time, effort, and cognitive experience from me, most of them about architecture and its arts and thoughts, but what saddens me is that I hesitate to publish them due to the difficulty of dealing with publishers.
He pointed out that the greed of large publishing houses or even small publishers who treat the author as a commodity for profit and loss rather than as an intellectual product deserving of reward, was the reason for the lack of publication, as publishers' eyes are focused on how much they can profit at the expense of your effort, not theirs!
He lamented that publishers do not pay attention to what the author and researcher present, to the extent that dealing with them has become a cause for disgust and disappointment.
He indicated that there is a significant gap between what the author seeks and what publishing houses aim for in exploiting and confiscating the efforts of the author and researcher, which is why he preferred to boycott this “bazaar.”
Thweini believed that the solution to this problem can only come through state intervention via official institutions that commit to adopting intellectual products at the very least, and not diminishing - as he said - the value of poetry and narratives that come second; as they are publications for enjoyment rather than for developing intellectual concepts that societies suffer from and seek to delegate to the elite.
Avoidance out of fear of failure
Writer Hussein Al-Malak sees that there are many reasons for the accumulation of works and hesitation in publishing; some are material due to printing costs, and others are psychological due to anxiety about the experience or because of a previous failed experience.
Al-Malak confirmed that experiences are sometimes for oneself and not for publication, or that they are experiences that the author has surpassed.
Lack of material and moral return
Poet Abdulrahman Moukli asserts that the writer has started to pay out of pocket to publish their creativity in publishing houses that give the creator only crumbs “if they give them anything at all.” He pointed out that there is a lack of sponsoring institutions for publishing that used to play this role in the past, such as literary clubs.
Moukli mentioned that there are creators who have reached a stage of avoidance of publishing and participation because they do not receive any moral or material return, and the creator is a person who must be considered and appreciated because they present a valuable product, and this is what the concerned institutions that were established to serve creativity and creators should understand.
Permission of the knowledgeable
Writer Abdulaziz Al-Nasafi has a perspective on authorship in general, attributing some authorship mistakes to haste, and starting before the cultural features of the writer have formed, and before they acquire the experience that makes them not regret publishing what they write later. He indicated that he is against a writer publishing what they do not consciously believe in culturally and creatively. He hinted that in his simple experience, he regretted the poems he published in his early poetry phase, and the articles he published in his early journalistic phase, and he thanked God that he did not knock on the door of authorship until he matured culturally.
Al-Nasafi confirmed that for ten years after graduating from the Arabic Language College at Imam University, he would sleep on an article and wake up to a poem, due to his supervision of an active and diverse cultural section. Not a day would pass without reading a book, but he bid farewell to all of this and left no notable mark except that he was fulfilling his cultural journalistic duty with love and passion, through commissioning writers, poets, novelists, and thinkers, interviewing them, following their new works, and reading what is happening in the cultural and intellectual milieu, even though he is considered part of the sea of culture and literature.
Al-Nasafi pointed out that he noticed that many creators who worked in journalism had their time stolen by journalism, “so they left the scene empty-handed,” and the same applies to several academics who did not emerge from their academic confinement and did not present to the reader - outside the university walls - a book that reflects their knowledge and status. Therefore, he wrote his first novel “A Song Coming from the Clouds” after finishing its draft in 2022, and he obtained permission for it before printing from ten creators, and he did the same with his other book on the art of Qalita, and before sending it to the press, he reviewed it with Professor Mohammed Radi Al-Sharif, and presented it to ten critics, including Dr. Abdullah Awqail Al-Sulami and Dr. Jreidi Al-Mansouri, who wrote the back cover, so the book was approved with admiration, and he decided to print it, indicating that the point of this narrative is that if the writer invests every minute of their time and dedicates themselves to their idea with seriousness and determination, they will accomplish and create, citing the abundant literary and cultural production of Dr. Ghazi Al-Qusaibi, whose major preoccupations did not prevent him from immortalizing his name in the sky of literature and beauty.
Misunderstanding and diminishment
Poet Abdulrahman Ahmed Asiri believes that the problem is not in the absence of creativity, but in the absence of an environment that grants it the opportunity to cross into the light. Many writers live between the anxiety and fear of expression and dissemination and the fear of reception; meaning they fear misunderstanding or diminishment, or let’s call it “critical persecution,” so they prefer silence over publication.
He pointed out that the institutional structure for publishing remains murky, as few publishing houses adopt serious works, while financial obstacles burden the creator, as the cost of printing comes out of their pocket, of course. As for the general cultural scene, it often preoccupies itself with seasons and events more than it does with forming a sustainable system that cares for the creative writer and new texts.
He indicated that he believes that the writer also faces the challenge of the digital age; as light content accelerates and the spaces that receive deep texts diminish, thus creativity remains besieged between an environment that does not embrace it and a general taste that seeks the quick and fleeting.
Asiri summarized the problem of the accumulation of texts in drawers as not being due to weakness in them, but rather the absence of a path that recognizes them and grants them the right to appear, as creativity exists but needs someone to prepare it for life.
