Dr. Abdullah Al-Humaili presented a philosophical paper titled "Philosophy: A Playground Outside the Fields" at a seminar during the Medina Book Fair 2025, moderated by the media figure Hashim Al-Jahdali. The seminar highlighted the role of philosophy in daily life and its reflection on the meaning of happiness and human existence.
Al-Humaili began his talk at the seminar, which was part of the cultural program accompanying the fair, by noting that philosophy is not a traditional science measured by strict methodologies or equations, but rather a flexible field that asserts its presence outside academic walls, exploring meaning and posing fundamental questions about life and humanity. He argued that the origin of philosophy in the Greek experience was a poetic act open to beauty and wonder, addressing existential issues from the awareness of the self, as reflected in the famous Greek phrase "Know thyself."
He emphasized that philosophical thinking permeates the details of daily life and can be felt in practices we consider simple, citing the example of a child's laughter, which expresses a pure moment free from calculations and carries profound significance in understanding human feelings in their purest manifestations.
He went on to discuss the relationship between philosophy and scientific progress, explaining that contemporary technological and cognitive developments have reshaped philosophical questions and pushed them into new paths that reconsider concepts of self, time, and knowledge. He affirmed that philosophical texts that interact with the transformations of reality and innovate their tools remain more useful than those that merely repeat past theses or settle for documenting old sayings.
He pointed out the importance of establishing a clear ethical vision at the intersection of philosophy with the sciences of psychology and sociology, considering that contemporary studies need to be nourished by a genuine human experience that emerges from life and engages in dialogue with it, rather than transcending it with rigid concepts.
Dr. Al-Humaili concluded his talk with an existential reflection on daily routine, saying: "Daily repetition brings me back to myself and enables me to feel it in a fast-paced time where it is difficult to catch one's breath."
The Medina Book Fair 2025, organized by the Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission, continues its cultural activities until August 4, from 2 PM to 12 AM, offering a diverse array of seminars, evenings, and dialogues that open new horizons for readers and visitors.
