Dr. Suleiman Al-Eidi spoke in a recorded interview about some of the embarrassing situations he faced while he was a news anchor and host on Saudi television, with kings, princes, and officials from the Ministry of Information and the television administration. These were moments of transparency in which Al-Eidi manifested to record a history that he must share with the public and future generations interested in media work!
The candid conversation with Dr. Al-Eidi reminded me of a dialogue I had with the late Dr. Badr Kareem when he presented to me a draft of his autobiography, which included many exciting and embarrassing situations with kings, princes, and officials. At that time, I encouraged him to publish the draft as it was, without omitting any of those situations, but he seemed hesitant and worried that some of them might cause him embarrassment. I tried in vain to convince him that these situations were no longer his property; they had become part of history and should be deposited in its treasury for future generations to learn about, especially since he would not be around then, nor would the personalities he felt embarrassed by. However, the book was published without the details of those situations, which weakened its content!
The same situation occurred with His Excellency Dr. Jameel Al-Hujailan when he sent me a draft of some chapters of his book for my opinion. I told him that his honesty and transparency would be the reason for the book's success and popularity, and indeed, the book was published with all its details, enhancing its value and introducing people to the behind-the-scenes work and exciting situations that became a deposit in the treasury of history after having been a deposit in his personal memory!
I always encourage those who have served in positions related to public service, as well as media professionals, to document their experiences and the situations they have gone through, even if the publication is delayed due to the lack of suitable circumstances at the moment. Circumstances change, and these experiences ultimately represent the addition that shapes our history. In my books "The Accompanying Minister" and "In Management" by Dr. Ghazi Al-Qusaibi, we have a good example of a perspective that benefited society in understanding the details of the relationship within the government!
Today, when I read what some newspapers and magazines publish about biographies and documents revealing the behind-the-scenes of events and meetings of leaders, dignitaries, and politicians, I find great benefit in understanding those stages of past history, measuring the present, and drawing lessons for the future!
In short... biographies, situations, and experiences of public figures belong to history!
